Funkmaster Flex Departs Hot 97 After 30 Years

The iconic DJ and radio personality, Funkmaster Flex, would be leaving New York City's Hot 97 after more than 30 years. Known for his signature "bomb drop" sound effect and unparalleled influence in hip-hop, Flex’s final show is set for Labor Day, September 1, 2025, at 7 p.m., marking the end of a monumental chapter in urban radio history.

Flex’s career also spans music production, with gold-certified mixtapes like The Mixtape series and The Tunnel (1999), featuring notable artists such as Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem. His passion for cars led to TV shows like Ride with Funkmaster Flex and partnerships with Ford and Chevrolet to customize vehicles. Recently honored with a Key to the City by Mayor Eric Adams for his contributions to NYC’s hip-hop scene, Flex’s legacy is undeniable.

As the Labor Day broadcast approaches, speculation swirls about Flex’s next move. Will he pivot to digital platforms, join another station, or focus on his car shows and upcoming album with artists like Lil Baby and Post Malone? Whatever the future holds, Funkmaster Flex’s departure from Hot 97 signals a seismic shift in hip-hop radio. His "bomb drops" were more than sound effects—they were a cultural stamp, declaring a song’s significance in an era when radio was king.

As streaming and digital platforms reshape music consumption, Flex’s exit prompts questions about the future of hip-hop radio and its ability to foster community and break new talent.
