Chance The Rapper's 'Coloring Book' Officially Certified Platinum by the RIAA

Chance The Rapper just added a major milestone to one of hip-hop’s most important independent projects. His 2016 mixtape Coloring Book has been certified Platinum by the RIAA.

According to the official RIAA Gold & Platinum database, Coloring Book received its Platinum certification on June 26, 2026, for 1,000,000 equivalent album units consumed in the United States.

Released on May 13, 2016, Coloring Book dropped as a free, streaming-exclusive project (initially on Apple Music). It immediately made history by becoming the first album to chart on the Billboard 200 based purely on streaming numbers, debuting at No. 8.

The project was a sonic and cultural shift, a gospel-rap masterpiece that blended Chance’s signature positivity, Chicago pride, faith, and family themes with lush production from The Social Experiment, Lido, Kaytranada, and others. Standout tracks like “No Problem” (feat. Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz), “Blessings”, “All We Got” (feat. Kanye West), and “Angels” (feat. Saba) became instant classics.

In 2017, Coloring Book won Best Rap Album at the 59th Grammy Awards, the first streaming-only project to ever win a major Grammy category. That win helped change how the industry views and awards streaming releases.

Even though it was given away for free, the project’s streams, sales, and cultural staying power have now pushed it to official Platinum status nearly 10 years later.

The Platinum certification lands right as Chance prepares for the Coloring Book 10th Anniversary Tour across North America this summer and fall. Fans who have been riding with the project since day one are finally seeing it get the official RIAA hardware it deserves.

Coloring Book proved you didn’t need a major label deal to make a classic. It showed the power of independent artistry, direct-to-fan releases, and staying true to your sound and message.
Congratulations to Chance The Rapper on the Platinum certification for Coloring Book. A well-earned honor for a true modern classic.
